Why giving presents makes you happy!
Why do we give each other gifts? In psychology, every human behavior is researched. So also about the how and why of exchanging gifts. Giving someone a gift strengthens the mutual bond, scientists say.
Presents as a symbol
In addition, the gift symbolizes the existing relationship. That's why you give your new love a houseplant at the beginning of the relationship, only later a trip to Paris and later a gold bracelet; in that order and not the other way around.
We give gifts to show our appreciation, gratitude and interest. A nice pair of binoculars for your best birdwatcher friend means that you have empathized with the other person and that you have taken the time to delve into the unfamiliar world of binoculars – just to name a few.
By the way, you also have something to do with that. A study by the University of Waikato, New Zealand, shows that people who spend money on others are happier than people who spend it on themselves. Giving gifts stimulates the reward center in the own brain.
